THE COURSE
Under the shadow of Ford Motor Company headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, on land Henry Ford himself purchased in 1915, Jack Nicklaus designed a championship golf course of high strategic value and ecological sensitivity.
The Tournament Players Club Michigan, located in the heart of a Detroit suburb known for its industrial energy and historic neighborhoods, is not only a tribute to golf architecture, but also to reclamation and rebirth. The 6,986-yard, par-72 layout is spread over a 210-acre tract that had fallen into disrepair, largely forgotten except as a dumping ground.
That all changed in 1990. The popular, world-class corporate/private golf facility and residential community hosted the Ford Senior Players Championship, one of the four major tournaments on the Champions Tour, and boasts a remarkable distinction as the world's first golf course to receive the prestigious John James Audubon Environmental Steward Award in recognition of its ecological restoration.
Water or wetlands come into play on nearly every hole while tall grasses on the perimeter work in harmony with spectator mounding to enhance the intimacy of the gently moving layout. Bunkers protect all but two of the small, strongly sloping, angled greens.
TPC Michigan is a precision golf course in a now-pristine environment -- a true win-win result.
